aNd Product Stewardship

- Local and State Government Efforts -

Western Electronic Product Stewardship Initiative (WEPSI) - WEPSI is a series of meetings with representatives from industry, government, nonprofit groups and others that have a stake in minimizing the environmental impact of electronic products in the Pacific Northwest.  A series of meetings will be held in different cities in the Northwest area beginning in July and extending over the course of a year.  The first multi-stakeholder meeting was held on July 18, 2001 in Portland, OR.  The next meeting will be held on September 25, 2001 in the Seattle/Tacoma area.

National Electronic Product Stewardship Initiative (NEPSI) - NEPSI  is an initiative coordinated by the National Product Stewardship Institute (PSI).   The PSI was created to assist state and local government agencies in establishing cooperative agreements with industry and environmental groups to reduce the health and environmental impacts from consumer product manufacture, use, storage, and disposal.  Thirteen states and seven local governments have officially joined the Product Stewardship Institute which is located at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.

NEPSI's main goal is to develop a system, which includes a viable financing mechanism, to maximize the collection, reuse, and recycling of used electronics.  In addition, the system should include incentives to design products that facilitate source reduction, reuse and recycling; reduced toxicity; and increased recycled content.
