Big Spring Creek Salmon Habitat Acquisition Project
Project Description
- Located in the Middle Green River Subwatershed
- Project is part of Salmon Habitat Plan project MG-7 (page 7-39)
- This project will acquire up to 79 acres including: 36-acre headwaters property, 31-acre forested property, and/or 12-acres of channel
Partners and Funding
- Led by King County in partnership with Mid-Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group, and Trout Unlimited
- $620,000 funded by SRFB (second round), $60,000 from the King Conservation District, and $35,000 from the Mid-Puget Sound Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group
- $200,000 funded by SRFB, in an additional grant provided in 2006

Importance for Salmon
- This project involves protection of existing habitat with the potential for stream restoration in the future
- Big Spring Creek is a key cold water source for Newaukum Creek, which is home to the threatened Chinook salmon
- The creek also is a haven for coho salmon that are currently abundant in this creek but across Puget Sound are considered a "candidate" species for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act
