Bear Creek Basin - Cold Creek Natural Area Acquisition
WRIA 8 Salmon Recovery Projects
Project Description
- This acquisition will preserve approximately 5.6 acres of undeveloped forested parcels of land in the Cold Creek Natural Area threatened with clearing and residential development.
- This water is 5-7 degrees Celsius colder than Bear Creek and helps provide vital habitat conditions to threatened chinook salmon, which spawn in Bear and Cottage Lake Creeks each fall.
- Addresses limiting factors (altered hydrology and elevated water temperature) in a core sub-area for chinook spawning and rearing in WRIA 8.
- The importance of protection the natural processes occurring in this area was identified in the Bear Creek Waterways 2000 program and 157 acres have been protected to date.
