King County ECC continues coordination of disaster aid

King County Emergency Coordination Center (KCECC) continues to take phone calls to compile a list of offers to provide large quantity or bulk donations. Such donations could include food, water, clothing, transportation services, housing or specific clothing items. Those wishing to donate items can contact our office at the 206-205-8280 or e-mail ecc.kc@metrokc.gov from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday.

It is important that people do not bring items to the KCECC or to any King County collection point until directed to do so.

Eric Holdeman, Director of King County Office of Emergency Management advises, “King County citizens are urged to donate financially instead of donating single items. Right now, it’s difficult to predict specific needs and often times donated goods don’t reach evacuees and are left in landfills. Collecting, receiving and processing small-quantity items can overwhelm emergency response agencies and volunteer organizations."

We know everyone has good intentions and wants to help right now. In an effort to best serve the victims and help the responding agencies in the affected hurricane areas, please do not self-deploy donated goods or automatically go to the hurricane area unless dispatched by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). One of the best ways for people and organizations to help is to donate funds to disaster relief efforts.

A list of disaster relief agencies is listed at www.metrokc.gov/prepare with information on how you can donate or volunteer.

Media inquires can be directed to 206-205-1000 or email to jic@metrokc.gov. The hours of operation for the JIC are Tuesday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those are the same hours the phone bank is open to the public.
