In King County, it is illegal for anyone to dispose of mercury-containing products, including thermostats, in the garbage or at transfer stations. There are many free options for recycling thermostats.

Homeowners and citizens have the following options for recycling mercury thermostats:

Bring thermostats to household hazardous waste facilities for free recycling.
Ask contractors to recycle mercury thermostats. They have many options for free recycling.
Take thermostats to certain heating and cooling equipment suppliers. Some suppliers recycle thermostats from contractors and from the general public.

How to recycle mercury thermostats
Bring the entire thermostat to the collection location. Don’t dismantle the thermostat or remove the mercury ampoule.
