Contractor Disposal

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation provides to recycle thermostats for free.

In King County, it is illegal for anyone to dispose of mercury-containing thermostats in the garbage or at transfer stations. This applies to residents, contractors and businesses. There are numerous free recycling options.

Where to recycle thermostats
Most heating and cooling equipment suppliers in King County collect mercury thermostats for recycling. There is no charge for this service.

How to order a recycling bin
Contractors may order their own mail-away recycling bin if they have at least seven technicians or if they are located far from other recycling services.

To order a bin, contact the Thermostat Recycling Corporation or call the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County at 206-263-3072. The bin is 12" x 12" x 22" and holds about 50 thermostats.

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) charges the contractor a $25 one-time fee. All future mailing and recycling costs are paid by TRC. After the full bin is sent to TRC, an empty bin is returned to the contractor.

How to recycle thermostats
Recycle the entire thermostat. Don’t dismantle the thermostat or remove the mercury ampoule.

How to recycle other mercury controls
Only mercury-containing thermostats are accepted by the TRC. Other mercury devices or switches must be handled by hazardous waste management companies or sent to mercury reclamation facilities.
