Proper disposal
Latex paint and latex paint stains are no longer considered hazardous waste. King County residents who cannot use up latex paint/stains should dry it out and then place it in the garbage with the lid off.

Drying out latex paint and latex paint stains.Use one of the following options to dry out latex paint and latex paint stains under cover from rain and away from children and pets.
  • With small amounts of leftover latex paint/stains (1 inch or less in the can), remove the lid and let the paint/stain dry out in the can. You can also paint on cardboard or newspaper and let it dry, then discard in the garbage.
  • For larger amounts, mix kitty litter into the latex paint/stains and allow mixture to dry. Use a 50/50 mixture for fast drying time.Add more kitty litter for latex paint stains that have more water.
  • Mix a commercial paint hardener such as "Waste Away" with latex paint/stains according to the directions.

Drying time may vary depending on the product, the method used, and the time of year.

The paint/stain is dry enough when it has a tacky, oatmeal-like consistency and will not spill out of the can. When the latex paint/stain is dry, put the can in the garbage with the lid off. Your garbage hauler will not accept it if the lid is on.

Do not dry out oil-based paint. It must be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection site.

For additional information about proper latex paint and latex paint stain disposal please see the web sites for King County Solid Waste Division.
Recycling
For large quantities of reusable paint/stain: If the paint/stain is not contaminated, old, has not been frozen and you are not in a hurry to get rid of it, visit IMEX or call the staff at 206-263-8465.

How can I get free latex paint?

Free latex paint may be available through the Industrial Materials Exchange (IMEX). Visit IMEX or call the staff at 206-263-8465.

How should I store paint?

You can help keep paint from going bad by storing the can upside down (make sure the lid is on tightly). By storing the paint can upside down the paint creates an air proof seal around the lid. Store away from extreme heat and cold and combustion. Store oil-based paint away from pesticides as these products are not compatible. This also applies when transporting these waste products to a hazardous waste facility for disposal.
