We'd like to invest in your business.
King County supports businesses that support the environment.
Over the past few years, hundreds of local businesses have benefited from the Voucher Incentive Program (VIP) by partnering with our waste management consultants to reduce the amount of chemicals going down the drain, into landfills, on the ground and into the air. Commitment to long-term change can earn your company 50% matching funds for every dollar wisely spent on hazardous materials management, up to a ceiling of $500.
If you have a small or medium-sized business, representatives of the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program are available to you as ongoing advisors. In addition to financial and technical assistance, your company benefits by reducing liability in the workplace and increasing worker safety.
Call (206) 263-8899 today, and join with other responsible businesses like yours to protect and enhance our environment and your worksite. You'll find that the Voucher Incentive Program is a sound investment in our shared goal.
Who can participate in the Voucher Incentive Program?
To be eligible, a business must:
- have a business license and be located in King County;
- generate only small amounts of hazardous waste*;
- receive a consultation visit from Local Hazardous Waste Management Program representative; and
- follow agreed-on recommendations for waste management, storage or prevention.
*Qualifying businesses must be small quantity generators or SQG's: they must produce less than 220 pounds of waste per month, or batch, and never accumulate more than 2,200 pounds at their site. A few gallons of waste paint or spent photofixer could qualify a business for this program.
Who pays for the Voucher Incentive Program?
A small surcharge on sewer and garbage fees funds the programs and services of the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County, including the Voucher Incentive Program.
What costs can be reimbursed?
The voucher can reimburse half of what a business spends - up to $500 total rebate - to manage, dispose of, reduce or recycle hazardous wastes. The steps taken by a business must be based on recommendations from LHWMP representatives and could include:
- lab testing of wastes
- waste transport and disposal
- setting up a recycling program
- purchasing equipment to prevent or reduce pollution
- buying alternative products
